In 2007, Samwel Majani traveled to the city to look for a job immediately after his KCSE exams. He saw a vacuum in the provision of local celebrity news and music lyrics online and then moved to fill the void by creating Ghafla.co.ke. The entertainment and gossip website has grown to become one of the biggest online media brand in Kenya.

In 2013, Radio Africa attempted to acquire Ghafla for $30,000 ; the amount which Majani revealed was peanuts. After the fall-out in negotiations, Radio Africa started mpasho.com.

In 2014, Russian ninja called Basily partnered with Genesis Technology and started TUKO.co.ke. In January 2019, the site had more than 2 million users with more than 6 million Facebook fans.

Robert Alai started kahawatungu.com, Cyprian Nyakundi started cnyakundi.com

Besides the above mentioned blogging sites, there are several others at the moment that are competing for a share of the money from advertisers.

How do these sites make money?

They mostly make money through selling ad space (direct ads) and sponsored content. Ghafla for instance currently runs Cooperative Bank and BetLion ads, making millions from those ads.

How much do you need to start a site like Tuko?

You need enough money to buy a domain name ($8 per year), pay for hosting ($50 per year) and design your site ($100).

Keep following for more profitable ways you can make money online as a solopreneur.
