One of the WordPress security rules is to always use files from the official source, it depends on what project you are working on. There is always a risk. Your decision.
For test null versions are good and if you can't affordable cost plugins then you can use null versions
yes for live sites it's always recommended to buy a license if you have a budget.
BTW null plugins are safe it totally depend where you downloading it.
