I agree with you actually i dropped to use all anti-virus softwares long time ago.
All of them stealing your data.
Best thing protecting computers from virus is "pay attention to every click."

well i am using kaspersky for a long time and from my experience its one of the best .. its detection ratio is very good as i have done some coding and made few stuff so i know this from personal experience.
Apart from privacy concerns which product is not stealing your data even google or other tech giants like facebook does the same all the targeting advert etc..
monitoring every click and software is not practical approach as these days you don't get your average viruses you get ransomware and which encrypts your data. So to prevent such situations i think you should use some sort of counter measure. windows defender won't protect you against such attacks.

It's your opinion and choose.
I'm not using and trust Win. defender and i do not use even anti-virus but i have not faced attack, cause i always control my pc (ports, data-transfers etc)
I did not say Social media platforms or search engines do not steal, of course they will steal because their job is data stealing
