Simple Q about backlinks

if you have several domains linking to one site, say 'johnshealthcare.com' but then decide your company is more broad later down the road and get a new domain, but keep the other to link to your homepage, say doctorsupplementsco.com, but the original johnshealthcare still links to doctorsupple... etc, will the backlinks for the johnshealthcare stay valid and help improve searches for your new domain? Or, if you have a ton of backlinks is it just better off not changing your domain because they get wasted. I want to get a lot of legit backlinks from reviewers, but I don't want to waste my time and money if my domain may/might change in the future (my domain issue is one I can't really solve now, its better since I only have on product to keep it specialized and then change it down the line, rather than change now'.

Also, any tips for 'good' backlinks to not lower your SEO rank. Are there hard and fast rules?
