Yes, you are right. It depends on the both.Very active is like the Babiato forum where users have something to say and it's meaningful.. Where they can share resources and knowledge.
Quality content is basically the content that users are interested in. It's not just written for the sake of being out there. It solves some problem.

Speed is everything. So let me explain.
Previously my site score in pagespeed was around 40 and it would take around 8 hours to index a page and i tracked down how many times googlebot was crawling.
Few days back i decided user experience is imp. So i decided to optimized website and made every page score 90+
And realized that googlebot started crawling at crazy speed.
Previously it used to index 1-4 posts per day with 3-8 hours delay.
After optimising the website, it took only 10-30mins for google to crawl and index every post.
My backlink profile is avg.
I recently tested this trick on a brand new site with zero backlinks. Surprisingly it's competing on 1st page last place.
I believe good website navigation + less duplicate content + website speed + some external links = what google loves.
My competitor learned this trick and now he's ranking too![]()
Sorry can't give the keywords/backlink info but trust me i have huge competition. I have 50+ regularly updated sites which are 4-8years old as competitors. my site is just 3 years old and another is 1 year old but started working on it since 2months (already adsense approved with some posts being ranked in top). What keyword and where? (the 0 backlinks)
Your equation already included a lot of stuff for someone who started with "Speed is everything.".
I love speed. I was already working on that before CWW was talked about.
But speed is just another piece of the puzzle.
When you go from 40 to 90, correct me if I'm wrong, but that's more than double.
Obviously, there are results.
