For those like me who really tried to get a card number (spoiler: only possible with a mobile phone in the US), the trick works by simply using the confirmation number together with the pin (also called Barcode).

These Lynda Library accounts usually get shut down after 2-3 months max (often faster) once the library can't verify your identity. Most send out a postcard to the address you register with which needs to be filled in and sent back to the library.
I've been using these "tricks" off and on over the last 3 years or so and they never last.
