it has been many years now i don't remember but i always use this two plugin listed below and my sites never got hacked or any malware etc i have been using WordPress since 2007 from basic to heaving content traffic driven websites.
No Paid version required.
1. https://wordpress.org/plugins/ninjafirewall/
2. https://wordpress.org/plugins/defender-security/
Scan site with https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/ and fix the said error.
You are done.

For initial precautions, setting password protected wp admin folder via http header is a good measure.. You can do this from cpanel directory permissions setting or manually creating htaccess+htpasswd
Secondly is completely disable php on certain directory (wp upload /date)
Many stuff you can do with htaccess plus it doesn't consume server resources
My admin login are still qwerty123 lol
