VirusTotal doesn't detect malware when the file just open a port on the target domain. Because is normal to open a port on a server. In that case is too hard to find suspicious code.
Not all of us are, it’s not right to assume what we do or what our income is. Some of us come here to make sure something works, before we buy it. Anything I’ve got from here, I’ve bought once I know it works. You can’t always assume what they tell you.

No problem bro, A long time ago I was very close with several Plugins that they took for malicious, but it was not, the problem was always that they exploited a flaw in the code to gain access to WP. But a flaw in the code does not mean that it is malicious code.
It's too hard to say, backdoors, exploits, shells, flaws in the code, eval() functions, encrypted functions, hashed and other more cases
