Try namecheap. There's this offer going on right now that gives you a domain for $0.98 if you buy for 2 years. Not exactly sure of the details/t&c but might be worth taking a look.

i dont think if you need to use a domain for serious work, you should go with a free domain, just go with a more cheaper domain to achieve your goals, but if you only need a domain for testing and test runs, then you can go with freenom, or even better yet, go with dynamic dns or even other dns providers offer free domains, like cloudns
