But first, you need to check out the work of the theme developer.
Why? some themes are like an ant nest. You will lose yourself in the sea of unused codes or, worse yet, some codes that do not work well in multiple ways. (for example, some themes say that they do work in rtl languages that absolutely do nothing)
And ask yourself, is it necessary to tweak all this useless stuff? Do I need to tweak every little code that there is?

Woah thanks for the info! I was planning to take between a web designer class or a web developer next year but I don't know very much yet which one is most suitable for me if I want to modify a theme I had purchased that I like. Thank you

Once you learn them inside and out you will be able to modify any theme anyway you like
