Hello Babiatos, I'm running here for help in making a decision

I have been doing website development on the side for a while now and currently managing 20+ clients. ( Mostly Business websites with modest traffic)

This has really opened my eyes and I'm contemplating opening a website hosting business to earn that extra buck.

My plan is to get a good VPN and Get Cpanel and WMHC license for server management. I will prioritize Security, reliability, and performance but should be at the lowest cost possible. ( A shared Cpanel and WMHC licenses; I have seen a couple of Licenses sales threads here)

The reason why I'm sticking with CPanel is that all my clients are already too used to the current Cpanel setup including webmails and all that so I don't have the option of switching to another panel. Migration from Cpanel to Cpanel is smooth too with little or no downtime.

Did I say that I've never handled an unmanaged VPS? That's the way I want to go since the cost is much lower and I want to maximize the profit too.

I'm looking for advice from those who are in the same business or have handled a VPS for the best hosting company that will offer the best services at a minimal cost. I'm also looking for a service that I can seamlessly upscale as demand arise. (RAM and Diskspace)

Kindly share your thoughts and advice.

My advice will be to get a reseller hosting package to start with, the lowest tier most hosting companies provide will get you a 25 cPanel limit which should be good for you. Later you can upgrade to a higher tier once get more customers. Running your own VPS without serious Linux system administration experience will not be easy, plus cPanel license fee will make it pricier. Some hosting companies offer WHMCS at a discounted rate for their resellers, you can avail that too if needed. Only when you have 100+ customers, you can consider a VPS or even a dedicated server. I'm on the business since 2003, and this is my advice, though others may have different opinions. Good luck!

Honestly, adding a hosting business is not the best idea. You're just inviting a lot of support issues (even if everything runs fine).

You should look in to other options that add monthly recurring revenue.

That's another reason for getting reseller hosting to get started with, hosting company will deal with the support issues (with @Kaibuma being the intermediary between his customers and the hosting company).

Same advice I had for him! Got a bit lazy to write it down, but this is good advice!

@RickGrimes22 @Ekushey thanks for your input

It's starting to make sense that I'll be burdening myself a little too much

Do you guys have a good reseller Hosting company that you would recommend?

If you need a System Engineer to manage your infrastructure, especially under security aspects, get in contact with me. I'm available to offer a paid consulting and VPS management if this can help.

You can check:
Try to stay away from new/smaller hosting companies, their rates will sound like a bargain, but one day they will disappear without trace and your clients will start blaming you for their lost sites.
