From my experience, I would say you should definitely check out the websites like Fiverr and Upwork and see what people are charging for the kind of website you are making. I my opinion, you should charge according to the functionalities that you will be putting into the website.
When I created a website as my first project, I created it for a friend of mine. It is an E-commerce site with a hell lot of functionalities! I charged a basic amount of
₹7000 (which amounts to roughly
$95) and now I charge monthly fee for maintenance of the website.
It is actually a great way of earning a passive income. You could ask the client that you can maintain the website for them and charge a nominal monthly fee for it. In most cases, they would agree, and that's how you could earn apart from the main site building charges.
Always try to charge nearly equal to what people are charging online for your niche. Of course if you are using premium themes/plugins you should charge accordingly. It all depends on the website type. But build trust between the client and you, so that they will continue to work with you.
