I work a full time job and don't have much time to be working on other websites but someone asked me to build them a simple website. It'll be created using wordpress.

How much should I charge them? I already told them to purchase the domain and hosting, since I don't want to be in charge of the yearly fees. The client is rather wealthy and not poor.

Ask Yourself How Much you Would Pay Someone To Build it For You... Or Divide The price Between Functionalities.. Or Like Charge per Hour... Estimate the no of Hours You gonna Work..
At The End you Will have to Decide the Final price...

it's simple.
ask yourself... how much work you did in hours, days
then .. what is your avg. monthly income in your country ..

so let's say I worked 2 weeks for a website, 8, 12 14 hours a day, every day. that hard work equals to a full month of avg. 8 hours dayjob.
In my country the average income is like 500 euros a month.. 500 is a good salary, 350 is the minimum.
So for my work, I will ask for 500 Euros with the possibility to resell the script/website or 1000 1200 euros for exclusivity.

Unless you do the theme yourself and considering the client is propably your friend I say 100$ should be okay. You can always see what others are charging on fiverr.com

Basically it depends on the functionalities and challenges you will face in making the website. Things to consider were
1. What kind of website it is? (Informative website or E-commerce website or you can say static or dynamic)
2. How much time it will take? (Generally an informative website takes up to 7 days depending on number of pages)
3. What platform are you using? (If its a WordPress then your cost will land low in comparison to other coding languages)
4. Graphics or Plugins going to be used in it. (If you are using any paid graphics or plugins definitely charge the cost accordingly)

Hope these point will make you clear regarding your pricing review...

All the best for your 1st project...

@BlakenFist From experience, Charge the amount that will keep you interested enough to finish it till the end. Most of the times, end users do not know / expect some functionalities that are complex to build.

So, IMHO, Charge enough to stay invested & interested in the final outcome

wordpress is not building a site .. is more like a helping someone to install since you have the knowledge. coding is when you actually write code, build an app, a website. wordpress is already established, you can customize it not build it.

Well said @sugin223pl I don't know why people think that wordpress is a language.. It's a platform like Wix Or Shopify where you can easily build a page using the premade themes and plugins

From my experience, I would say you should definitely check out the websites like Fiverr and Upwork and see what people are charging for the kind of website you are making. I my opinion, you should charge according to the functionalities that you will be putting into the website.

When I created a website as my first project, I created it for a friend of mine. It is an E-commerce site with a hell lot of functionalities! I charged a basic amount of ₹7000 (which amounts to roughly $95) and now I charge monthly fee for maintenance of the website.

It is actually a great way of earning a passive income. You could ask the client that you can maintain the website for them and charge a nominal monthly fee for it. In most cases, they would agree, and that's how you could earn apart from the main site building charges.

Always try to charge nearly equal to what people are charging online for your niche. Of course if you are using premium themes/plugins you should charge accordingly. It all depends on the website type. But build trust between the client and you, so that they will continue to work with you.

And remember if you need any help, Babiato Forums is here 😀
All the best for your first Project buddy! 😉

Anyone can build a website with WordPress, but not everyone can maintain it. If you charge them $100 for the website, then charge them an additional fee for future maintenance, at least they'll be content knowing you're going to take care of the website, and that it's not a one-time fee.

Also, it's an extra income for you if you REALLY KNOW what you're doing.

And always ask for their budget. How much they're willing to spend on the website. If they're looking for a heavily customized website, then charge them a premium with a cherry on top.

Depends where you are from, what is average salary there, if the client is your friend or not... I have done websites which took me months to configure for friends of mine for totally free, yes I did those as side projects but still took me much time. I do not do that anymore as I do not have time.
My best price I got for creating a website was four figures and I have done the website in 2 hours by configuring one template, but this was for a wealthy client.
So everything depends :) If it is your first website and you are interested into this for future - charge small amount, so you will get some web development practice and in the same time will get paid for it.
In case you are not interested into web dev and dont have the time, just outsource it to someone who can be trusted, like USER=30029]@medw1311[/USER] if he has the time. I charge a lot of money so maybe not a good choice.

First no offense, I understand how you feel as I am a web developer myself.

But you need to know that there are some places in this world with average income $100 a month or even below that figure. So if you propose the calculation based on average income then maybe $100 is fine or maybe $50 is fine too when someone can finish the website in less than a week because it's just simple work and in a month he can finish 4-6 sites. I can say this because I live in a place with minimum monthly salary rate proposed by the government is around $170 (this is a normal 9-5 with 5 days a week).

Some people I know charge minimum $599 for wordpress development, more customized then it could be more than $1000. Or if it's a woocommerce site with many custom made plugins, the rate could be $2000+.

My point is, really, pricing depends on various factors. Not necessarily influenced by average income of the country where you live. Your skills (which can affect how long you can finish the job), your portfolios, your existing clients pool, and most important is how you value yourself, can all be considered to pricing your service rate.

Just my two cents.
